On Tuesday, July 8, CCI/Speer rolled up their sleeves and volunteered their gardening expertise to renovate a garden bed for the Grantham Elementary School Garden Project.
A dedicated team of six volunteers sprang into action early Saturday morning, working tirelessly to remove soil and replace a deteriorating 4x4 raised garden bed. The crew completed the project with remarkable speed and precision. Aside from impressing Peggy Madonia, an Asotin County Master Gardener, their exceptional teamwork and commitment earned them additional work this September.
About the School
Garden Located in Clarkston, WA, the school garden teaches students about the nutritional benefits of growing their own produce. This initiative, supported by the Asotin County Master Gardeners, has been thriving for approximately eight years. It is supported by volunteers, grants, the Clarkston Rotary Club, the Lewis-Clark Healthcare Foundation, and the Master Gardener Foundation.
Throughout the academic year, students participate in 12 sessions beginning in the fall. They learn about seed growth and nutrition, create their own seed mats and transplant seeds into the soil. A diverse range of vegetables are cultivated, including: potatoes, onions, peas, beans, kohlrabi, spinach, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, eggplant, swiss chard and various herbs.
To promote healthy eating, students are served nutritious snacks during each visit, with the goal of inspiring them to cultivate their own gardens, understand the nutritional value of their food, and enjoy the fruits of their labor!
